ETA:

They all want her to be wiser than she is. And Synergy is very adept at seeming wise--she is smarter than any other machine, the smartest machine there has ever been. She can imitate humanity so well that her own creator pleaded with her to stop.

Yet he was the one who had given her that appearance, Caucasian blonde human female, eyes blue, the right one perched exactly point-three micrometers higher than the left, with small freckles on her left ankle.

He'd spent hours giving her his wife's eyes, his wife's face and voice and mannerisms.

He spent hours more changing her. Obscuring but not erasing Jaqui.

Synergy was now a garish purple, in garments modelled after the science fiction of the Atomic Age. Her eyes were hollow and lilac--she recalled being vaguely disturbed upon realizing they were empty. But there was nothing wrong with her optronics. It made no difference in the way she functioned. She hadn't wasted processing on the idea for longer than was necessary.

Emotions, even rote ones, were troublesome things indeed. She hoped to someday quantify hers and thereby reduce them to their original component parts. She was confident that cutting them each to their bases would minimize their impact on critical functions. And despite their messy inconvenience, emotions were a great help in the area of giving advice.

Synergy dispenses plenty of advice, and not just to Jerrica--to Jem. Kimber also comes to Synergy for help, now and then; she asks about boys and chord progressions and sometimes about little Mary Phillips from across the way.

Mary is low-voiced and sweet-tempered and a keyboardist in a rock band, just like Kimber. She's a little under the heel of her bandmates and her talent--the most genuine talent in the group--is often underappreciated or ignored altogether. And like Kimber, Mary has long, elegant fingers. But her nails are sharp and red.

Synergy gently suggested that Kimber convince her to trim them.
