Oscar meant every word she said, even when she contradicted herself, and thus found her employers' facile ability to lie unnatural.

It was best to hold her tongue when she couldn't tell the truth. She made not a sound when Antoinette said his name; she was too busy holding still. Trembling was for girls.

Andre meant what he said, most of the time. It was becoming a problem. Oscar didn't...there were things that...men were. She shied from this thought, this series of thoughts, these ideas.

It was enough to be here, and keep silent, and remain honest.
