I do believe, I do declare, mercy me.

Luncheon today was as follows: chilled ham with red potato salad and iced tea, followed by scratch-made pound cake involving strategic hints of rum.

Anymore Southern, this fare could not get. With the exception of certain fruits Yankees are convinced have racist overtones. (I had never even HEARD that until I was twenty-two, from a guy who used to live in Rock-somethingorother, Michigan.)

Lordy be.

Oh. Full recordings from old player-piano rolls. HURRY UP AND GET HERE. Rags and cakewalk and saloon airs with slight chance of barbershop = true. Common domain, I love you so much.

Bingo!

This one time at college, we were talking about stuff to have for lunch, and I was all, "Some watermelon would be awesome!"

and he pretty much said "Watermelon is for black people!" with this shocked look on his face.

And I was, "BITCH WHUT."

I mean, dude. Watermelon is what you eat when it's hot outside. Duh.

I thought everybody knew that. And I had NEVER heard that before. I did not know there was such a thing as "racist" fruit, and, um, I was pretty offended, because here was this bone-white dude from waaaay up the map telling me Southerners are all racist assholes and then saying watermelon is for black people.

I was floored. And upset.

It's kinda funny now, though, in hindsight. XD

How utterly bizarre. That is perhaps the absolutely most bizarre thing I've ever heard. (I also didn't know until college that apparently, fried chicken is a stereotype of black people that can be offensive? The newspaper staff didn't either, so some apparently racist comments slipped through, and oops, our anonymous call-in forum was in trouble.)

Well, in Kansas we don't think watermelon is for black people. We might have to have black people to think that.
