This is fun, funny, and kinda an interesting alt-take. AU. Harry Potter; I guess there's gonna be an H/Hr vibe to it later on, but it might as well be genfic.

I'm not sure how I acquired it; I was poking through [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants and there's always links to the Pit, and somebody's favorite list had it in there somewhere; it appears to be the "Sink to the Bottom With You" or "The Abyss" of its respective fandom, judging by review count.

I haven't read the rec, but "Sink to the Bottom with You"...that was a good story. It still gets updated...like once every three years. It kind of sank into Robert Jordan-ness, though. Here's the new chapter! It's 7,000 words! Nothing happens! Makes me think she got cold feet about ending it or didn't actually know how to.

What fandom is "The Abyss" from?

It's fun! Harry Potter is awesome, but nobody cares, 'cause of his limelight-stealing brother Daniel! XD As of three chapters in, it's a sharp!smart parody of some actual canon tendencies, and a good look at how Harry might deal with being a total nobody even in a world where he's always been part of the wizarding life *and other minor spoilers*.

Plus, there was Gringotts! (I likes me some Gringotts scenes, yes. Even minor ones.)

I have yet to see if the fic devolves from there, but it's the first thing I've read in a while that wasn't FULL OF LURID EYEBLEED.

My bad, it's not "The Abyss", it's "Understanding" (confused the title and the summary hook). It's Matrix; Agent Smith/OFC, but it's so well-written that doesn't matter.

It has something like four hundred reviews and was a serious "OMG LOVE IT" among most of the Smith fen I once knew. It approaches almost-publishable-in-the-good-sense in many places and is nearly Sue-like Behavior free, which is amazing, 'cause it's totally about a relationship between Smith and Some Girl Who Is, Amazingly, Not a Sue, For Serious.

It also appears to be permanently dead. But I hope, now and then.

Understanding! I remember that one. It's been so long... Definitely worth the reread, even if it never gets finished.

Speaking of Matrix, I also liked Three Shades of Sky, but with the last update being 2003, I don't think it will ever be finished. Why is all the good fanfiction dead?

OMG Three Shades of Sky!

I was thinking of that one, too, but couldn't remember its title. XD I was all, "Eh, sky, Darkling Sky or Hues of Sky or something like that..."

Thanks for the reminder; I was totally blanking! XD

Yeah. Understanding is pretty much the Smith fic all other Smith fic would like to be when it grows up. ^_^
